What is sterile water for injection (WfI)?
Sterile water for injection (WfI – Water for Injection) is purified, sterilized water without any added preservatives or additives. It is manufactured in accordance with pharmaceutical standards that guarantee the absence of microorganisms, endotoxins, and chemical impurities.
Unlike ordinary distilled water, WfI meets the strict purity criteria required for research protocols involving biologically active compounds, such as lyophilized peptides.

When to Use Sterile Water in Research
Protocols with BA-sensitive peptides
Some peptides exhibit reduced stability or interference when in contact with benzyl alcohol. In these cases, preservative-free sterile water (WfI) is the only appropriate choice. If you are unsure about the compatibility of a specific peptide with BA, consult the available literature or use sterile water as a safer alternative.
Short-term research experiments
For experiments in which the entire reconstituted volume is consumed within 24–72 hours, the antimicrobial protection provided by benzyl alcohol offers no research advantage. In this case, sterile water is the more logical choice, both economically and biochemically.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)
Distilled water is not sterile—it has not undergone a sterilization process that guarantees the absence of microorganisms and endotoxins. Boiled water may be sterile for a short time, but it is not pharmaceutically pure. For research protocols involving peptides, WfI or BWfI that meets pharmaceutical purity standards is essential.
Prefer sterile water (WfI) in three cases: (1) if your peptide may be sensitive to benzyl alcohol, (2) if you will use the entire reconstituted volume within 2–3 days, (3) if the research protocol explicitly prohibits the use of antimicrobial preservatives.
After reconstitution with sterile water, store the peptide solution at 2–8 °C and use it ideally within 24 hours, or within 2–3 days at most. Without an antimicrobial preservative, the risk of contamination after opening is higher than with bacteriostatic water.
No. Sterile water without preservatives (WfI) is intended for single-use only. After piercing the stopper and withdrawing the first volume, the remainder must be used up during a single experiment or discarded. For repeated withdrawals, use bacteriostatic water.
WfI (Water for Injection) is sterile water without preservatives—single-use, with a maximum solution stability of 2–3 days. BWfI (Bacteriostatic Water for Injection) contains 0.9% benzyl alcohol—multi-dose, with a solution stability of 28–30 days. For a detailed comparison, see the Bacteriostatic Water product page.
